The CCC is delighted to welcome Stephanie Samolovitch, MSW, LSW, as our Director of Patient Services. Stephanie celebrated her 5th year of survivorship from leukemia last August! She received her undergraduate and Master’s Degree from the University of Pittsburgh and served as our intern from 2008 to 2010. Originally, Stephanie was a pre-pharmacy student who changed her major once she confronted cancer. “Battling cancer changed my entire life. I changed my major to social work in order to help others coping with this disease because I saw firsthand the importance of hope and multi-faceted support. The Cancer Caring Center is a great organization and I look forward to helping our patients and family members!” Stephanie trained with Bonnie Shields, who worked at the Center for 7 years before taking a part time job at West Penn. Stephanie most recently spoke about hope in December at the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute Gala and is available to talk about her survivorship and the Center at meetings and social events.

The Center has a longstanding friendship with Satchels of Caring, a local non-profit that makes and distributes beautifully handstitched satchels filled with inspirational and therapeutic contents, such as a turban, scarf, journal and support literature to women with cancer. They are literally a 'hug in a bag' and have brightened the life of female cancer patients since 2003. Last year, Alex Speidel, a south Fayette resident and son of Barbara and David Speidel, recognized the need for Male Satchels of Caring. He chose this project for his Eagle Scout candidacy and contacted national companies for toiletires and other relevant items solicited friend and family members for additional funds. Along with members of his home Troop 2, he made leather key chains and assembled bags donated them to area agencies including our Center. Alex is now an Eagle Scout and we salute him for his spectacular achievement and for giving us Male Satchels of Caring.

Thank you Le Cordon Bleu!

On left is Michael Rainforth and on the right is Kathi Steeb, both Le Cordon Bleu Institute of Culinary Arts staff. We salute... the students for their stellar efforts - thank you and of course, bon appétit!”
