| Cancer: A Child and Adolescent's Point of View | |
From a young child wondering if he will lose all his hair just like Mommy, to a
teenager experiencing a dramatic personality change after his father is
diagnosed, it is clear that cancer affects not just the patient, but all family
members as well.
The Burger King Cancer Caring Center has long recognized the need to address the effect cancer has on all family members. Under the direction of Hilda Schorr-Ribera Ph.D, a board certified medical psychotherapist and licensed psychologist, we offer age-specific (ages 2 to 5, 6 to 10, 11 to 13, 14 to 16) support groups for children who have a family member with cancer. We also offer age-specific Bereavement groups for children to help them cope with the stress and trauma from the loss of a significant family member. All sessions are free and held at the Burger King Cancer Caring Center which is located in the heart of Bloomfield. Please call 622-1212 for scheduling information. Groups for children who have a family member with cancer and Short Term Bereavement groups for children are projects of the Burger King Cancer Caring Center with Center partners Coca-Cola and Heinz USA. Additional funding provided by:
Alcoa Foundation and Allegheny County Medical Society.
Pet Therapy for Kids
The Center offers Pet Therapy for Children at the Animal Friends Headquarters in the North Hills. Each session (complete with a professional therapist and certified therapy animals) offers kids the opportunity to safely connect with a pet and communicate feelings about grief, anxiety and depression. Additionally, we offer seasonal “Family Fun Days” for parents and children to bond, share activities and make memories. Family Fun Days have occurred at our Bloomfield Headquarters and at a private horse farm in Cranberry, where children were thrilled to ride or walk the horses. The 2007 programming was underwritten by Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield. Also, the Center continues to offer support groups in Bloomfield and Mt. Lebanon for children who have a family member with cancer and for grieving kids.
